Debate on estate tax brewing in Senate

...Burghard, a Democratic candidate to represent the 9th District in the U.S. House of Representatives, called the Senate bill a tax break for the "ultra-wealthy." Burghard's Republican opponent, incumbent Rep. Kenny Hulshof, sponsored a House bill calling for repeal of the estate tax in April 2005.

"This is a bad time for tax breaks," Burghard said. "This is a tax break to those who don't need it at a time when the government is spending our children into oblivion."

Burghard said that, instead of repeal, the Senate should consider raising the minimum asset amount for individuals subject to the tax to $4 million.

"In that process, you will exempt the overwhelming majority of people in the 9th District and in America," he said...
